Jiufen or Chiufen literally means in Chinese "nine portions".It was said that during the early Qing Dynasty that nine families live in this isolated place hence the village always order nine portions every time a shipment arrived from town. It is also a gold mining place from 1430 however it just discovered and developed during the Qing Era. This is also in seaside mountain area in Ruifang District, New Taipei city. So imagined how people had worked and lived there was amazing.
Jiufen is a glimpse of the past of Taiwan, it is rich in history, the breathtaking views, some of the first shops of the locals were still here, tea houses, and some of the authentic Taiwanese products which we only have seen in this place, and the authentic local snacks are in every corner of the street.

The inspired place from the Miyazaki movie " Spirited Away"

Yes, this famous grand tea house and the old town of Jiufen was said to be the inspiration of Hayao Miyazaki for the movie Spirited Away. Due to this, it has picked up its popularity and now become one of the favourite tourist spots in Taiwan. So People who watched and love the movie felt real that they have travelled in time and was apart of the Japanese Animated Movie when they see and visited this place.

Is it worth the trip or the hike to go here? my answer is a big "YES".

The climb is indeed tiring however once you reached the main old street and look around you will be amazed at the houses and shops here plus will fill your tummy while you stroll around with the authentic snacks and food. The vendor here comes from all ages and yet all are entertaining. They will have free taste samples of the product they are selling and will not get upset if you will not buy. Very hospitable.

And we didn't even explore the entire place however  It was very satisfying just to be here.

Actually Jiufen Old Street is quite small so you can explore other places too. For us, we explore and had lunch here which is part of our Klook day tour.

You can take a taxi around TWD 1200-1400, by Private car (CHECK HERE), and by train and bus around TWD 110.

Train approximate travel time will take 1.5 hours. By bus, take the MRT blue line Zhongxiao Fuxing Station exit 1 then take the bus 1062 to Jiufen Old Street Station. You can check the bus 1062 timetable here.

Budget Checked, we spent for our lunch and some snacks around TWD 235 each.
